Tips For Tutors

Tips For Tutors

A simple list for tutoring from Susan Gibbs in Effective Tutoring: Assembling the Pieces

BEGIN INSTRUCTION IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE START OF THE TUTORING SESSION.

Start once you have finished catching up or introductions

PROVIDE CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS

e.g. “Read this list of words” rather than “Could you read this list of words”

USE EXPLICIT TEACHING TECHNIQUES

Showing them how to do something rather than reading the directions to them

BE POSITIVE.

Praise goes a long way

STOP LEARNERS IMMEDIATELY AFTER ERROR

Show them how to do it correctly

CHART LEARNER PERFORMANCE (IF POSSIBLE)

Show visual displays of improvements. Grades, quiz scores, ect.

BE PATIENT

Encourage and support them

RECORD LEARNER PERFORMANCE

Make notes of possible things to cover later in the lesson or in the future

WORK FROM THE BEGINNING TO THE END OF THE SESSION

Remember they are paying for the time. Maximize it as much as possible.

KEEP TUTORING SESSIONS LIVELY.

Keep the learner motivated and wanting to come back. Make it fun!

IGNORE INCONSEQUENTIAL AND UNWANTED LEARNER BEHAVIOR.

Focus on what they are doing well rather than dwell on what they have missed.

ASSIGN SMALL HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS

Don’t give them more homework, but assign them a goal to work on between sessions.

DON'T FORGET TO PREPARE AHEAD OF TIME

Have your lesson plan ready to go. Have backup ideas in case you finish early and have extra time for the session
